Possibly I just wanted to use my new icon.

Title: Recruit
Rating: PG for violence
Media: Fic
Pairing: Nascent Lucci/Kalifa
Word Count: 300
Prompt: Beginnings
Notes: Lucci and Kalifa's first meeting, when they're fourteen and eleven respectively.

The first thing she did was try to kill him.

He didn’t see her until she swung the kitchen knife. The blade glanced off his abdomen, and she staggered back, immediately ducking for cover. Impressive.

“What’s your name?” he asked the girl crouching in the rubble. In response, she jammed the knife downward, ripping through his shoe, and turned to run. He caught her arm. She tried to twist free, and then kicked him in the shin. “You can keep fighting me, or you can tell me your name. The first won’t do any good and the second may save your life.”

She paused, scrawny muscle taught under his fingers. “Kalifa.”

He twisted her arm to inspect the bruises forming there. “Did you kill the last person who did this?”

Another pause. “He attacked me.”

“Of that I’ve no doubt.” He took hold of her chin, steady when she tried to jerk away. “Did the raiders kill your family?”

The tears were answer enough. He released her chin, keeping hold of her arm. “I’m going to let go in a moment,” he said. “You can run, but you’ll die here. If you come with me, you might die, but you’ve a better chance than you do here. And you might get stronger. You might be able to stop this from happening again.”

He let go. She stayed.

“You’re just a boy.”

“No. But you’re just a girl. Come and be something better.”

Nodding, she wiped her mouth on her arm. “What’s your name?”

“Rob Lucci.”

“Can I hold your hand?”

That was the strangest request he’d ever had from a recruit. “To the ship,” he allowed. “After that, you’re on your own.”

“But,” she said, and stopped, and started again, “you’ll be there?”

“Yes,” said Lucci, and took her hand.
