Once Upon a Time...

Title: Mukashi
Rating: PG for minor language (dang it, even age won't mellow that man's mouth!)
Media: drabble
Word Count: 300
Pairings/Characters: all Strawhats/OC, presumably; many small children
Prompt: beginnings

Warnings: implied character death at some point; future-fic
Disclaimer: Characters and setting? Not mine. Probably just as well. Here, have them back...
Summary: Every story has a beginning.
Notes: "Mukashi, mukashi" means "in olden days, in olden days," and is the Japanese equivalent fairy-tale form to the English "once upon a time".

"Mukashi, mukashi," the old man begins, "there was a young man..."

Children tumble over each other to find the best seats, two small boys squabbling over spots nearest the old man's knees. One tiny girl with cornsilk-pale hair skips up and worms herself into his lap. He chuckles quietly and gives her an affectionate squeeze before settling her down right in front.

The story he tells is one of epic deeds in distant kingdoms, a beautiful princess -- or two! -- and dashing heroes, fierce battles and daring rescues and terrible (if sometimes very pretty, he amends at a sharp look from one of the adults who have drifted closer to hear as well) villains.

When he is done, the children let out a collective sigh, and then the babble of questions begins. The storyteller, however, merely shoos the tykes off to their parents and waits, smiling, for his few remaining nakama to approach.

"Oi, mosshead. Nice story. Enies Lobby, the fairy tale version?"

"I think it's charming, Cook-san. Ever since Franky... left us, it's rare to find myself referred to as a princess."

"Still think you should leave the tales to Uso--"

There's a brief, stony silence, and then the seated man coughs. "Where do you think," he finally wheezes, "I learned the stories?"

"Shit-bastard. Good thing my grand-daughter likes you, or I'd so kick your wizened old ass."

"You only wish," Zoro retorts, over Nami's exasperated "You guys!!" Sanji gives him a hand up, while Nami fusses over them both.

"Oi, there any punch left so we can drink to the second Legendary Pirate King?"

"If not I can make more, or have one of the boys do it. We'll have a toast to absent and departed friends."

"No. Let's make it a toast to history, and the future."
