When Luffy was a child, before he ever became the man that could become the pirate king, he lived much like any small child raised in a village near the ocean. The local eateries would feed him, the village women would take care of him, and the fishermen would try to teach him how to swim. It was a life from before he lived.

The first change in his life appeared while he was sitting at the bar with Makino. A red haired man walked into his life searching for sake and rum and walked out of it minus a left arm. After Shanks, Luffy had a dream.

Outraged that a pirate had become his beloved grandson’s role model, Luffy’s grandfather moved Luffy out of the village and into an isolated house in the mountains. This was the second major life change: he was now a younger brother, and Luffy now had family.

Luffy’s life changed many times because of others: Shanks, his grandfather, and his two brothers, but the first time Luffy started a new portion of his life was when he set out to sea. Luffy reached out, grabbed Adventure with his two hands, and refused to let go. It was his beginning.

For my first post: an incredibly bad (not to mention: late) drabble. Believe it or not, I did write this on time. I just didn't type it up. Oh well. At the very least it isn't wasting away in my journal.

This was very good! I like seeing the influences on his decisions laid out so neatly. It helps show where he came from, what shaped him.

That was what I was going for!

While I can see Luffy being an unusual child even without all the influences he had growing up (his habit of eating everything in sight, everyone?), I can't see him being the person Oda-sensei writes him as.

I had also wanted to get a bit of Luffy's past involved, but the main point of this fic was to show the fact that his leaving Fuusha village really was the first time that Luffy made a decision that changed his life. In the series I would say that the next point where Luffy makes a similar decision is when he sends the message to his scattered nakama. It's an epic moment. :)

This competition has been going on for ... three weeks or thereabouts. The winner from the last prompts needs to get online and declare a winner before this one will end though. And that hasn't happened yet.

In other words, it's supposed to be a weekly thing. Emphasis on the 'supposed'.

I'm a big confused as to why you both underlined and italicized things though; seems like a bit of overkill. XD

When I emphasize things with my handwriting I tend to write it in italics and underline as well. I guess that happened when I typed it up, too. I wasn't really thinking about it. :)
