fic post: Brown Envelopes
Not the greatest title, but it was all I could come up with for now.
I'm distracting myself from super-long angsty WIP with something softer... though this still didn't turn out all that fluffy, alas.
Title: Brown Envelopes
Media: Fic
Word Count: 295
Rating: G
Pairing: Vivi/Strawhats; hint at Nami/Vivi; possibly one-sided Kohza->Vivi
Prompt: Lie
In the end, Kohza is only human, and can never resist peeking at those particular letters from far away that arrive irregularly at his doorstep. But it's all written like dry trade accounts, signed by "Basti", supposedly a business contact of his – and not at all, say, an orange-haired Cat Burglar of the Strawhat Pirates.
Letters can get intercepted by World Government spies and other unsavoury people. Naturally, a princess can't be found communicating with notorious pirates. But she can receive post from her Environmental Minister (and childhood friend/former rebel leader) without any danger. So Kohza faithfully puts "Basti's" letters in his own envelopes, seals them with official Alabastan insignia and sends them on to her. Twice he's been able to give them to her directly, seeing her face lit up with a heart-clenching joy.
He wonders what they really say, in code. Maybe just variations of We fought hard but we're all right now; we've seen interesting places and we miss you.
Maybe something else, more romantic and personal... He never got to meet her, but Pell and Igaram have let slip that Nami seemed to be great friends with Vivi, even more so than the other Strawhats. If he asked Vivi, maybe she'd tell him. Kohza doesn't want to be the kind of guy who would ask.
In truth, there are sweet words that he could send to Vivi, too. But there are barriers in place for him as well; and besides, he suspects that part of her heart has been taken. Though perhaps he won't know for sure until the day comes when they can all be more open - if that ever happens.
For now, he keeps playing courier of secret missives, wondering if he ought to hope for honesty or not.

And you flatter me terribly. I myself often flip back and forth between Vivi/Kohza and Vivi/Nami effortlessly. (Obviously Vivi/Kohza can't work if Kohza doesn't accept the importance of the Strawhats in her life, though!)

It was a nice take into Vivi and Kohza's way of thinking, specially Kohza, I liked how he does this favours to Vivi it's really sweet, and now I actually wonder if Nami sends Vivi letters, it wouldn't be weird if you think about it xD
Overall it was nice and enjoyable, Very cute work ;)

Is Basti supposed to be a play on Nami's cat burglar nickname and Bast? The idea of them communicating in code is brilliant and now I'm wondering how they worked it all out, picturing them muttering over code words in the palace library and teasing about silly things on the ship and whatnot.

Yes, you guessed it exactly! I was trying to come up with something Namilike yet Alabastan.
*nods* It must have been something like that... Vivi didn't let them know for sure she was staying until the end, so maybe they were talking hypothetically.
