Paid in Full
The air is completely still. Even though he's standing on the beach, if Ace closes his eyes, he can hear the mewling of dying prisoners and the chink of chains as they thrash weakly against their nightmares. He watches the waves pull in and out, as if they were on a spring, oscillating for all eternity. The stifling pressure of undersea waves against thick sea stone assaults him and Ace wonders if maybe he's not ready to be alone again yet.
No regrets... So he focuses on the sun above and rubs his healing wrists. It's all gone: the cuffs, the oppressing bars and walls, the small disk they shoved into his wounded back, thinking to damp his fire forever. The old man's doctors stressed the need for Ace to stay in his own body for as long as possible to heal properly; it's deflected questions more than anything else.
The tide comes in while he thinks, cool water washing back and forth over his legs. He steps in waist-deep with deliberate slowness.
He throws back his head and laughs because the leaded feeling in his limbs is the same as on land. He splashes water to dilute the salt on his face and returns to the dry rocks. He hadn't really expected to be able to swim again, but Luffy's been living in his back pocket for the last three weeks, so some of it had to rub off.
He'll need to buy some coats and maybe even a shirt or two.
After all, some things just break for good.

I was angling for despair, but Ace didn't feel like it XD So it turned out as it did.
