I'm happy! For a new theme, can I suggest 'rope'?

Paulie? Bondage? Ship rigging? Enough to hang one's self with? I hope people will enjoy this prompt with some interpretation or another...

I forgot that I couldn't reply to my own topic, so I'm posting it anyway.
Actually I wrote this first for the enemies topic, then the one I actually posted was my first ever plot bunny attack.

Title: No Hard Feelings.

A strange love triangle )

Every time the captain went overboard, it terrified her. Sure, someone always managed to fish him out in time, but this wasn’t an enemy they could beat and leave behind. The ocean was always there, always waiting for the day when it could finally steal their Luffy from them, from her in particular.

Luffy was precious, they wouldn’t let him go easily, but the ocean, master thief that it was had stolen many precious things in the past. It had already taken their beloved first ship along with the many captains, both good and bad, that had been lost to its indeterminable depths. Nami didn’t know how many times she’d manipulated other people into becoming the ocean’s prey. And many of those lost had been excellent swimmers. Luffy was anything but.

Still, every time his nakama rescued him, Luffy would turn towards the ocean, (causing Nami’s heart to stop again) and offer it one of his reassuring grins. The ocean was not an enemy they could beat. It wasn’t an enemy at all. It was just a thief, and as that went, Luffy had complete faith in his own thief’s ability. He just had to make sure the ocean understood that he loved it too, but his nakama needed him more.

After that, he would turn that smile towards Nami and let her beat the crap out of him. After all he’d just been smiling at her particular enemy. Still she always understood later for she too loved the ocean.
