Title: No Loss at All
Rating: PG?
Pairing/Characters: Shanks
Word Count: 273
Prompt: Loss
Notes: This isn't the best it could be, but I think I'm riding the deadline here, so it'll have to do. Also, as an aside, hello everyone! It's good to be here.
He’s lost many things over his lifetime, some worth more than others. Money. Treasure. His innocence. Friendships. Honor. A home. He can’t really say he regrets it. Some he mourns more than others, but if their loss was necessary to bring him to where he is now, he can honestly say he’d part with them in a heartbeat.
He never broods incessantly over loss, either. He isn’t the brooding type, and, frankly, there’re better things to do with his time. Treasure to find, adventure to be had, enemies fought, friends made. He is a captain as well, so his crew must be watched out for, provided for, directed. His time is limited enough without adding more things in.
But sometimes, thinking of loss creeps up on him. When there are pivotal decisions that must be made, he takes the time to think on loss, what he’s willing to part with at this moment and what he’s not. Some decisions, like where to go next, can be ruminated over for a bit. Others must be made in a snap; the Grand Line really doesn’t have room for those that dawdle, after all.
Some things, though, he doesn’t have to think of at all.
It’s the last he faces right now. His little friend, as tough as he thinks he is, is in trouble, and Shanks doesn’t have to stop and think of what he needs to do.
When all’s said and done, he’ll look back on this and smile. This is one of the better losses he’s ever had.
Compared to what it could have been, the loss of an arm was really no loss at all.
