When he was told that his grandfather was visiting that day Ace seriously considered prolonging his errand. Even a few minutes delay from the inevitable Training of Love was tempting. Until he realized that Dadan had already left for work. Meaning Luffy was at home.
Alone.
With Garp.
Breathless, Ace reached the house to find that the Vice Admiral had already arrived and was well into delivering his “You’re going to be a Great Marine!” speech to a captive audience.
“Whew…”
Knowing that nothing could stop the old man when he got on his favorite topic, the elder boy turned to go prepare the tea and crackers, hoping they’d get the crazy geezer to go easy on them, when Luffy just had to say it:
“I’m gonna be a pirate!”
WHUMP!!!
Any other time Ace would have laughed at the indignant yelp that issued from the rubber boy, knowing full well that the kid couldn’t be hurt by mere punches, but for some reason, it was the last thing he felt like doing.
Maybe it was because of the tears that had sprung up but refused to fall or how Luffy clutched at his now-lumpy head, trembling.
Maybe cause it wasn’t over.
When Garp’s second blow, having whistled passed a straw hat thanks to the younger boy’s self-preservation instinct finally kicking in, scored a large gaping hole in the cottage wall, his horror was only surpassed by a rage he’d never experienced before.
Without knowing or caring how, he suddenly found himself standing protectively before his little brother, fists clenched, glaring hotly at the bastard that dared hurt him.
“Don’t you hit Luffy again, you old piece of shit!!”
