Lost and Found
He'd been a boy when he'd learned how fleeting life was. He held the small bird gingerly in one hand. It still felt warm, wind stirring its feathers. Its eyes were empty and dull.
He learned that everything was just as fragile. He'd seen them melt like mirages in the desert. Lives, human or otherwise. Rain. Trust. Friendship. Dreams.
He'd felt it shatter between him and his trusted companions. He’d ripped it from his soul and crushed it brutally underfoot.
He'd felt it drift through his fingers and sucked it greedily from parched dreamers, listening to their final rattling breaths.
Then he saw his flawless plans crumble. He saw companions remain loyal despite the odds. He saw life slip away only to return in full force. He saw miracles where he’d once seen careless idealism. And he found that he could believe again.
When he stood before his former friend once more, he let his confidence and pride slip away.
"Seems I'm out of a job, and I don't feel like doing the pirate bit all over again."
The man's face might as well have been out of granite for all the emotion he showed.
"I…I was an idiot. I'm sorry." The words felt like they were wrenched from him by a pair of pliers, "If it's possible, if you'll have me, I'd like to do it again with you."
"Do you have nothing else?" His voice was as cold as ever.
"I do. I know what I want now. I'll make it on my own if you won't have me. I'll fight alone, if I have to."
Dragon smiled.
"Good to have you back…Crocodile."
Everything was doomed to change. Everything was uncertain, amorphous at times. And so, it was good to have something worth believing in once more.
Eh heh heh. Yaoi undertones? I don't know what you're talking about! *casually slams the overflowing closet of gay porn shut* It must be your imagination!

Date: 2010-02-22 03:58 pm (UTC)This piece was amazing. Emotive in all the right place and just, just, beautiful, seriously. Crocodile being humble made me cringe so much in a good way. It's just so... WRONG for him to have to swallow everything with humility, I spent a quarter of the fic wanting to smack Dragon's granite expression off his face. I love Crocodile being introspective. :) You wrote the descriptions powerfully and the symbolisms here and there were lovely. \O/ Much love for this. ♥ It fit the prompt perfectly as well. :D
:/ Am I the only one who's fascinated with all the animal themes/names? What's Odacchi? Some kind of zookeeper wannabe? What? -giggles manfully-

Date: 2010-02-22 04:09 pm (UTC)With Dragon's coldness, I was thinking of Usopp after he left in Water 7 and Zoro had Luffy wait for Usopp to apologize before accepting him back. That's what I was going for anyways.
Oh the animal themes! Yes it's a weird quirk of Oda's, but it works! It reminds me a bit of DB actually! :)
Thank you so much for the review!
