Title: Firsts
Rating: K
Media: Fanfiction
Pairing/Characters: Whitebeard
Word Count: 300
Prompt: Virgin
Summary: There is a first time for everything. Small things first, like a musket, a blade or a dish of sake. Then bigger things, like dreams, a future and a name.
Firsts
He had grown up an orphan on a small island, unaccustomed to the concept of warmth and stranger to the idea of peace.
He had no recollection of his childhood or his birth name. He had barely been a year old when he had been found, the lucky survivor of a siege in town. A nameless baby with no past and no future.
He grew to be muscular with a temper to match. No questions were asked when he joined the rebels at fifteen.
By his sixteenth year, he had learnt how to gut an enemy in under three seconds, detonate explosives and aim two muskets simultaneously. He was accustomed to the warmth of human life-blood writing red rivulets on parched soil.
Civil conflict died out before he turned eighteen. There were no more civilians to spare, and no ammunition or steel that hadn’t been used or broken.
He still didn’t have a name.
Gathering sufficient resources, he left on a small boat and arrived relatively unscathed a few days later on another island, in time to remember the first golden sunset he had ever seen on land.
The ones back home had been tinged red with blood and dust.
That night, he watched from the tavern window as village children darted around the square singing their merry songs.
He had never had the chance to dream before, but there was always a first.
He decided that the tavern’s name would do.
Swinging the pretty barmaid to his side with a gentle tug, he asked her what her first choice of a name for a son would be. Giggling, she told him.
The next morning, he hopped brazenly onto a pirate ship heading out to sea, with nothing but a brace of pistols, a dream and a name.
Edward Newgate.

A/N: It does so feel good to be writing again. :D I'm afraid I am still suffering the throes of Papabeard's heroic departure. Damn the man. I will now resolve to write something happy soon. If Oda-sensei would please just get everyone the fuck out of Marineford, Land Of All That Is Depressing, and give me some more happy ocean. )< -folds arms-

Date: 2010-03-22 09:07 pm (UTC)Very beautiful and introspective. Love it!
And I am sick of Marineford as well. But Law has arrived with his submarine (that may or may not be yellow, but should be), so hopefully we are on our way out. ^^
