I've had this stuck in my head for weeks.
Jan. 13th, 2009 12:30 pmTitle: Sunny Side Up
Rating: G
Media: Fic
Characters: Luffy, assorted Straw Hats
Word Count: 300
Prompt: Fear (and lack thereof)
Notes: Luffy needs to be badass in fandom more often.
“Ready?”
“Ready!” Luffy braces, feet planted, knuckles slammed into palm, grinning. From behind him, a swish of steel sounds off the wooden thump of the catapult, and for a few seconds, as the net of bloodied fish sails overhead, there is silence. Then, the bait smacks into the ocean with a hearty splash, and stillness continues, collective breath held, waiting.
After a moment, Franky asks “We got anything?” and leans over the railing to have a look.
“I think--” Chopper begins from his vantage point across the deck, but the phrase is cut short with a screech as he rockets back to relative safety, and Robin says, “It would appear that we do.”
Nami is halfway through advising Luffy to make sure he doesn’t fall off the ship, not in these waters, because like hell anyone’s coming after him, when it happens. Unfathomably immense, the sea king rises from the water, finned crest highlighted in veins against the cold predawn light, massive jaws fanged and dripping with seawater and gore, breath a rancid wash across the deck. Someone, possibly Usopp, screams. Luffy’s grin widens.
And then, far too fast, it strikes.
For a blinding second, all is chaos, but Luffy’s arms are triple wrapped around the monster’s jaws, slamming its head into the deck, rocking the ship and throwing up a wave that washes bait and scale and splinter into the sea, and among the madness there is a frenzied whoop of triumph and a thunderous crack before, suddenly as it began, and aside from the lessened pitching of the Sunny’s deck, it’s over.
In the wake of that brief and heady battle, Luffy stands atop his kill, laughing, and over the sounds of Chopper’s wails and Nami’s orders and Zoro’s impressed accusations of idiocy, the captain shouts: “SANJI! BREAKFAST!”

Date: 2009-01-14 12:14 am (UTC)I really liked this! The lack of fear is something very important in One Piece, and I liked how you went with it. I also liked how you got most of the characters mentioned in this. I don't know why, but I find that nice.
