A/N: I actually had a different idea for this prompt, and I plan to write it anyway, but since it IS Usopp's birthday and all, I decided to go ahead with this, too. ^^

 

 

“Yeah right, kid; that’s the worst lie yet!”

“No way we’d believe you on today of all days!”

“Captain, not even we would believe you on that one.”

Usopp sighed on his way to Kaya’s house. He knew not all of his stories were exactly credible, but they could at least believe him about this.

He slipped his way dejectedly through the broken part of the fence and stole his way across the lawn, eyes darting across the lawn in case he had to make a quick duck into the bushes. But no one appeared, and he shimmied his way up the tree.

Kaya was already waiting at the window. “Usopp-san! I thought I heard you coming.”

Usopp smiled despite himself. Kaya’s smiling face always made his day brighter.

“Hey, Kaya, how are you today?”

“I’m fine. So, what story do you have planned for me?”

He chuckled and immediately launched into his tale. It wasn’t as exuberant as usual, apparently, because after awhile Kaya stopped him.

“Usopp-san, is something bothering you?”

He grimaced and looked down at his hands. “Well, actually…”

She won’t believe me.

“It’s my birthday today.”

For a second she was totally silent, and his heart sank.

“One moment, please.” She disappeared into the room, then returned a minute later.

Holding a large piece of cake.

“Here. Merry brought me this, but I want you to have it.”

He blinked. “But it’s your cake.”

She shrugged, smiling. “Happy birthday!”

Many years later, Usopp would look back and wonder if maybe, just maybe, she had known all along.
