Lay down with the lions...
Jan. 14th, 2009 06:11 pmTitle: Butcher
Rating: PG-15/R-ish for themes
Media: drabble
Word Count: 300
Pairing/Characters: Chopper, Sanji
Prompt: fear
Warnings: sort of dark and possibly gory stuff
Disclaimer: Characters and setting? Not mine. Probably just as well. Here, have them back...
Summary: You'd think he'd be used to this by now. He's a doctor, a surgeon; this shouldn't bother him. But.
Excuse: I was cutting up meat t'other day and the cubs were all "Ewww!!!" So I was thinking...
~~~
Chopper's a doctor. He knows all about the insides of people, how they fall apart and how to put them back together again. He's seen an awful lot of putting back together since joining Luffy.
Most of the time, it's Zoro he's putting back together again. Zoro's a swordsman, which means he tends to seek other blademasters out, not only to improve his own skills, but also because the only other fighter really suited to facing a blade is Sanji, and the cook usually has something, or someone, else to deal with besides whoever out there has another sword.
You'd think, with all the cuts he's had to stitch closed, the sight of raw flesh wouldn't bother Chopper quite so much any more.
But Sanji...
Sanji is a cook.
And there's a tiny, very quiet part in the back of Chopper's mind that is still all reindeer. That's not so bad, but it's filtered through his very human intelligence.
It's not that he really thinks Sanji would ever hurt him. Not knowingly, voluntarily. But Chopper knows psychology, too, and for as well-adjusted as Sanji is, there are still telltale signs that something deep and dark and scary and brittle isn't quite as neatly folded away and resolved in Sanji's heart as it could be.
Chopper has seen how sharp Sanji's blades are, slicing easily through skin and meat and bone alike. It's not quite so bad when Chopper can't really identify what body part it was before it ended up on the cutting board, and fortunately there's a lot of fish served on this ship.
But today, Sanji is butchering, and Chopper thinks he will just stay far away from the galley until the little voice in the very back of his head has nothing to scream about any more.
Date: 2009-01-15 12:51 am (UTC)I like how this sorta lingers in your mind and gives you a lot to think about. Like what it means, exactly, that "there are still telltale signs that something deep and dark and scary and brittle isn't quite as neatly folded away and resolved in Sanji's heart as it could be."
It's very interesting and manages to say a lot within only 300 words. Very good job! I love it!
