"Every Marine should know how," Bellemere had said once, and she had spent many hours unwittingly demonstrating, her eyes focused on turning the past into the present and the future, and the smooth, even movements of her fingers.

"Gen said every woman should have one," Nojiko had explained on one of those secret trips home to "visit the orchard". She had slipped it into the tiny wallet, easily hidden in any outfit (including a bikini), that held Nami's most treasured possessions (a set of lockpicks, the first coin she'd stolen, and a picture of her family).

And now, as Nami bites off the thread after (once again) repairing the greatest treasure of the next Pirate King, she's glad for this skill, sometimes even above her abilities to chart a course and draw a map and keep a handful of rowdy boys in line.

Where would Hat be, without Nami's needle?
