It was one of those warm evenings where the sweat makes your shirt stick to your chest and makes your hair hang like a dead animal from the top of your scalp. He hated nights like that, despite them having a tendency to invite the bare skin of women to make appearances and the bars having their blenders on stand-by for cold drinks.
And it was one of these cold drinks he bought for the beautiful girl in the simple orange sundress, sitting idly at the bar as she watched the other patrons. He slid into the seat next to hers as the bartender brought her the drink. He told her it was on him, and he gave her his best smile. She looked at him, stunned, and returned a grin.
They shot the breeze for a few minutes – he showed her his new tattoo, the jolly roger of the pirate crew he’d just joined. He was a proud member of Captain Franco’s pirate crew, the Thorny Rose Pirates. For a moment he thought her saw her eyes darken, but before he could get a second look she sad she was impressed. Then she asked him if he wanted to dance.
They glided across the dance floor – well, perhaps he didn’t, but she was floating, drifting in his arms like fish in the sea. Her skirt swirled around her knees like it was made of air, and her red lips shined like rubies in the dull light. She leaned in close, her nose touching his. She thanked him for the dance and melted away into the crowd.
Several months later, he saw the face of Cat Burglar Nami, the woman who’d stolen his wallet that night, on a wanted poster amongst the other seven faces of the Straw Hat Pirates.
