Rating: G
Word Count: 300
Prompt: Ghost in the Machine. Or as close as I could come. Sorry for the sort of fail. XD
The small boat struggles down the stream, crashing into little pebbles in its way that Usopp pretends are huge rocks, barring it on its adventure. He crouches on the stream bank and watches it, toes in the mud, heels in the dirt. The brave captain Usopp is doing the best he can with the storm. He is lashed to the deck, turning a wheel in his hands that are as big and strong as Papa’s. His crewmen are afraid and crying, but he has to reach the angel who is waiting for him at the end of the stream— all in white. Some of the stream gets in his eyes because they’re suddenly wet and he scrubs them with the back of his wrist and sniffs.
Something crunches behind him. He turns, not afraid but so he can face the beast like a brave man should. It’s no beast but Mrs. Daiko who glares at him, her hands on her hips. She’s supposed to be cooking him meals, he’s supposed to staying near the house but she forgets and so does he.
“I was fighting sea monsters,” Usopp says, wiggling his toes in the mud.
“I’m tired of looking for you,” Mrs. Daiko snaps. “And stop putting that boat in the water.” She snatches it out, water dripping from the bottom and shoves it at him. “You’ll lose it.”
“Boats are s’pposed to be on the water,” Usopp says. “They have to prove they’re brave so they can get a soul.” Like Papa had told him once.
“Don’t be stupid. Only people have souls. Now lets go so I can get home.”
Boats can have souls. Papa said and Usopp knows, like he knows the sky is blue. One day when he’s a brave like his Papa, he’ll find one.
