Slipped the Surly Bonds of Earth
.ooOoo.
It’s as if he’s been looking through a window this whole time.
He realizes it must be a bit like watching the ocean from a hotel room. You can see a finite expanse of water, but you can’t smell the damp, salty air and its shifting traces of seaweed and fish. You can see the shoreline waves but you can’t hear the cascading crash of breakers or the soft susurration across the sand as the ocean inhales for another go.
And until now – until this Devil Fruit – he understands that he’s never experienced the sky . . . that he’s just been in some hotel room. He’s merely seen it through a silencing pane of glass called gravity.
But oh what a pity! Unlike the sea, he is incapable of describing This.
Human language is utterly insufficient.
There are no words for the sound and feel of this air; how its laughter in his ears and fingers through his flames tell of not just the mischief found in the tiniest zephyr to the largest gale, but of the wind itself being humor given breath.
No words for this brilliant light of the sun; how the fiery scent of life and energy and exhilaration zing through his senses to his brain like a forceful sneeze, and he knows that this is not just the light of the sun but Sunlight and she’s alive.
No words for the taste of these clouds; how the minuscule droplets collect around his beak and electrify his tongue with the sharp taste of ice and distance and vigor.
And nothing can possibly describe this blue. It is a boundless sense of clarity; in every direction and from every shade he can almost see branching paths of what could be. It is so vibrant and deeper than just a color; it is joy and serenity and wonder made manifest.
From the moment his feet left the earth, to the excited heartbeats of a daring dive, to the breathless seconds as he snaps open his wings and soars again, he’s been completely enthralled. This sky is so much, much more than the sum of his senses. It is an existence.
If it weren’t for hunger and thirst, if it weren’t for family and friends, those mortal bonds as strong as gravity, he’d never touch ground. This would be true for everyone, he realizes; this plane of experience is too intoxicating – there’d be no one left to walk the earth.
And this he thinks is why humans were never given to fly.
And so he thanks his lucky stars and trills a song of gratitude for being given this immeasurable gift, this glorious favor of flight.
.ooOoo.
For something so apparently indescribable I was completely unable to stop the words running away from me. When it came time to gut this to 300 words . . . I couldn’t, it would have been stale and I’m actually really pleased with it just as it is.
