It was a misunderstanding.
That’s what he keeps telling himself. But he can’t come to believe his own words.
It was a misunderstanding.
He couldn’t remember what he was doing; or maybe he can and he just didn’t want to acknowledge it. His memory is foggy and dream-like; but he can still hear her whispering in his ear, can still smell her floral perfume, can still feel the way her fingernails bit into his back and left long, red welts.
It was a misunderstanding.
He sees a coy face and sees brightly colored hair — or is he imagining it? Those vivid colors of orange and green — her hair, her dress — and black — her bra, her panties—are still swimming behind his eyes, stubbornly clinging to his mind as if to torment him.
It was a misunderstanding.
He recalls the look of disbelief on his lover’s face, recalls the confusion, the shock, and the hurt, then the wave of betrayal, of anger — and shame. Shame of what? Of having trusted him? Of having believed in him?
Was he even worth something like that?
It was a misunderstanding.
He swallows those words and lights up. The bed is empty sans himself and he can smoke freely; no listening to disgusted protests or having to look at contemptuous grimaces. The cigarette burns between his fingers, smoke unfurling into the air, nicotine dispersing in the room.
It was a misunderstanding.
No, he tells himself — tells her — it wasn’t. It was a mistake.
He drops his cigarette in the ashtray, dumps his face into his hands, and cries.

Date: 2012-08-09 09:36 pm (UTC)He always thinks about things too much... It does seem like he might need to get the ol' sorry speech ready though!
I also like the descriptions a lot - the smoke, Sanji's thought process, the repetition of the prompt as a kind of mantra... it's all really cool when you put it together.
I'm kinda sad for him but I guess that these bachelors have to learn somehow!!!
