Title: Silence Vectors
Rating: T/PG-13
Media: fic
Characters: Sanji, Usopp, OC (minor)
Genre: Horror+Angst=Fridge Horror?
Word Count: 296
Prompt: misunderstanding
As predicted, the cough was starting to spot blood. Sanji's final plans had begun to fall into place, so today he ignored everything and let Etta drag them to the shoreline again. The little girl kept a firm grip on Usopp's hand, and for the first time in weeks, the longnose's nervous worry about bumping into something deadly turned to quiet reliance. Usopp wasn't missing out with his eyes bandaged, Sanji reflected. The place was brown, a million different shades of brown, but all of them mixed with grey, the life and vibrancy seeped out of them. Sanji's lungs began burning after five minute's walk. The combination of acrid air and activity took a toll on his weakening lungs.
It was the stench alone that sent his stomach into twists, though. Etta didn't seem to notice—never did—leading Usopp along in her search for something alive on the beach. Maybe she hoped for another bunch of outsiders to wash up, more color and life coming into her world. Sanji scanned the distance for the Sunny, but eventually he had to close his eyes because the wind coming off the sea made them burn. He doesn't look down at the rotting fish he knows are there—they're half the awful smell.
It's all a misunderstanding, Usopp had said. And anyway, I don't see any fish from the East Blue here. So what if some West, North, and South fish happen to die in the mine pollution and wash up on this beach? It doesn't count if it's not all of them.
Sanji smiled, now staring out at nothing in particular. Yes. All a misunderstanding. He had to agree. A big misunderstanding.
And if Usopp had been blindfolded when he'd said that, well maybe Sanji just misunderstood what he meant by the word see.
-----
Because I honestly was starting to be driven crazy by the idea here, even though I can't invest the time in what would undoubtedly be long!fic. The prompt made me think of it again, and since it fit, I couldn't resist at least this much. Distressing Sanji must be in this week.
