Title: Not a stranger
Rating: K+
Media: Fic
Characters: Shanks, Benn, Yasopp, Usopp
Word Count: 300
Prompt: reunion

I've been meaning to write this for a while, so the prompt came at a great time! It sure was tricky fitting it into the word limit though. It took me a while, but I'm happy with how it turned out, so I hope you like it too!
PS - Why do Yasopp and Benn not have character tags? :(

Shanks’s eyes slid from Luffy, who was happily chattering away, to the Straw Hat crew lounging around the beach and finally to the side where Benn stood. Their gazes met, and his eyebrow raised a fraction in a silent question. The first mate’s corresponding eye-roll was answer enough. Shanks sighed inwardly, and tilted his head sideways in a wordless order. Benn disappeared into the forest.

Under the trees, a group of men hovered. “Where is he?” Benn asked quietly.

One man wordlessly pointed beyond the trees. Catching sight of the target, Benn nodded. “Go.”

A thud, a scuffle and a startled yelp later, their prey was caught in their grasp.

Yasopp, pinned down by the weight of three men, glared balefully up at his old friend.

“Captain’s orders,” Benn said simply.

“Damn him,” the blond muttered.

“Alright now, come on.”

However, Yasopp had somehow gotten a grip around a tree, and now clung stubbornly to it like a lifeline. “But, but… What if he hates me!?”

Benn cuffed him lightly on the head. “Idiot.”

Yasopp smiled wryly as he relinquished his hold on the tree. “I’m being silly, aren’t I?”

Benn snorted. “Good that you know it.” With a smile, he lightly pushed the other man forward. “Go on, he’s waiting for you.”

------

Yasopp paused at the edge of the forest, where he could observe but not be noticed.

His eyes immediately picked out the laughing youth with the slim but sturdy build, whose black hair that curled wildly behind his head. A stranger, yet at the same time not a stranger at all. Banchina’s nose, Banchina’s smile… Mixed with features that he saw every morning in the mirror. Usopp. His son.

He had missed fifteen years of his son’s life…

He’d be damned if he missed anything now.

Because we're all waiting for this reunion to happen...

Like. You. Wouldn't. Believe.

Seriously the day Yasopp and Usopp meet again is the day I die happy. But until then, I'm always happy to read an interpretation of their meeting by yet another talented writer!

Anyways, I like this take on it with Yasopp kind of showing a 'cowardly' attitude. I can't exactly explain why it appeals to me, maybe it's just the whole 'father-showing-emotional-vulnerability' bit. I dunno it's cute though.
And also Shanks silently giving orders, Benn knowing exactly what his captain is asking, Yasopp being scolded with only insult - I like this to. The way the crew is so familiar with each other they don't even need to speak to communicate and how to knock sense into each other without actually needing to give a lesson. It's a nice way to portray how long they've been together and so on.

A stranger, yet at the same time not a stranger at all. Banchina’s nose, Banchina’s smile… Mixed with features that he saw every morning in the mirror. Usopp. His son.

These lines are totally my favorite though. It's a cute, fond fatherly line that really warms my heart and wants to make me snuggle the whole family.

I don't think I ever really thought about picturing this reunion, or the moment right before it, from Yasopp's POV - but I really like the interpretation that here *he* is the nervous one, who's scared of approaching the son he abandoned! It makes him more sympathetic to me.
