Rating: PG
Media: Fic
Pairing/Characters: Norland, Calgara (Gen)
Word Count: 267
Prompt: Religion
“Tell me. What is this that I have just killed?”
“A snake.”
“No! I have broken sacred law and killed a god. Do you understand me? A god?! And all you can see is a snake! And you say this curse is really a curable disease?!”
There was a pause, and Norland looked up at the feral man above him intently. He found himself surprised to see this ruthless warrior, so bent on blood and carnage before, reduced to tears. This was a man who had told his own daughter to relinquish her life and thrown her the dagger for doing so. The man who had ruthlessly stabbed him in the back with that spear, who had cursed his very name and would have slaughtered him and all his men without a second thought, was weeping bitterly.
And yet his tears were real, full of anguish and lost hope. It was such a stark change in this warrior’s mannerisms that it took him briefly by surprise.
“…Can you really save my precious village?”
It was in that moment that Norland understood how deeply his adversary had been devoted to his deities. He would have given the one thing most precious to him in the world for a chance at redemption, even though another life on top of so many others would have done nothing to appease them.
Why had their bloodthirsty gods inspired such fear and blind devotion in this undeniably powerful man? What sway did their power hold over him that he could not see a snake from a god?
Norland frowned, and nodded.
“…I can.”
