Title: Rite of Initiation
Rating: G?
Media: fiction
Pairing/Characters: Rayleigh, Roger, Shanks
Word Count(if applicable): 300 exactly
Prompt: beginnings

It’s only after they’ve left the warm waters of West Blue do they discover the stowaway. The brat doesn’t flinch, doesn’t pale when the others suggest throwing him overboard – they’ve already got a few apprentices, they can't feed another - even though Sea Kings have been spotted in the area.

He knows it doesn’t matter. Roger’s taken a shine to the skinny kid, the way he’s grinning. A strong will, that one, he can hear him say now. And he’d be right, damn him – Roger always somehow knew the measure of a man. Or boy in this case, because their stowaway is really little more.

A strong will, but the Grand Line’s bested many men with such a will. A pirate’s got to be strong to survive. He knows it. Roger knows it, in every sense of the word strength.

He knows it doesn’t matter. The brat’s already arguing with one of the apprentices like he’s never been anywhere else. Roger gestures him over to his side. Whispers a few choice words in his ear.

He sighs, even though a blind man could have seen this coming from leagues away. Roger just laughs, welcomes the kid aboard.

He shoulders the crew aside, into the circle, face-to-face with the red-haired brat. There’s nudges, and knowing grins – they know what’s coming.

The kid’s got a sword, maybe he’s more prepared than he looks. That thought dissipates when he disarms the boy easily, the cheap blade falling to the deck and the men laugh, cheer their first mate, thump the kid on the back. Only one man’s ever beaten him, they say. The kid laughs then, an easy grin.

They spar after that every day for four months. He’ll teach him to survive.

But Roger will teach him – teach them all - strength.

I love the way Roger comes off in this. It's like you have to respect him. And it definitely sounds like Shanks too.

Ooh, I really like this. It's interesting to take a peek at the great Pirate King + tiny!Shanks, d'aw.

(And on a random note, much love for your SN if it's from where I think it's from.)

XD This was excellent (and exactly what I'd planned myself). I love how you characterize Roger in this.
