Prompt: Shadow/Shadow
Stop and Stare
Sometimes, Luffy passes right by a mirror and he turns back and moves toward his own reflection. He uses one of his fingers to trace over the scar under his left eye, and as expected, it feels like rubber and nothing more. Soon after, he shrugs and walks away, thinking nothing of the mark.
He doesn't stop to consider the scar to be a shadow of his younger self, a shadow that follows him everywhere he goes in order to scream that one day he will have to prove his dedication and courage and strength and his lack of fear for death and violence and pain to his favorite pirates, pirates that had left him behind after having him make a promise.
He doesn't stop to remember how he had stabbed himself in the face to prove his worthiness to his those same pirates. He doesn't stop to remember them refusing to take him out to sea because the dangers were too much for a little boy like him to handle despite his protests.
He doesn't stop to think about how far he's come since then. He doesn't stop to think that he's now sailing through the merciless and unforgiving Grand Line with a crew that he cherishes more than anything else in the world, and he doesn't stop to think that the bounty on his head should remind him of all the obstacles that they've overcome together since the beginning of their journey.
And he doesn't stop to think that as long he continues to prove to his friends that they can make it through the Grand Line alive and that he can help accomplish their individual dreams and that he can protect them until the very end, he shouldn't feel the need to prove anything to anyone else.
