The Entire Damned Family

You laugh.

You laugh and laugh and laugh

You laugh because it annoys your superior, and that’s funny.

You laugh at the absurdity of the situation – 20 years since that disaster with the Golden Lion and someone has broken into Impel Down. Bwah!

You laugh because now both your boys are in Hell.

One condemned, the other to be killed on sight, and against all reason you want to place your bet on the younger one.

You laugh because who could have ever imagined that Luffy – simple, scrappy, smiling Luffy – would one day lead the Marines on a merry chase in their own playground?

And why didn’t you see it coming earlier?

Because you made them brothers – or they did it themselves – and there’s a love there that won’t be held back by walls and bars and chains and danger. Come Hell or high water – fire, brimstone and the end of the world, Luffy will never let anyone take Ace from the life he cherishes. You know that.

You laugh because you trained Luffy to be the best damned Marine he could be. And he’s going to be the best of a different kind.

You laugh because crying is not an option.

…I just. Wrote. Garp angst. What the hell is wrong with me!! O_O

I’m sorry Garp! I really am! Here, um…have a lollipop?

Oh, and, just in case people – who are not as insane and obsessive as I – didn’t recognize it, the title is from when Sengoku threatens to make Garp take responsibility for his entire damned family’s actions. The Subject line is from the same scene.

Waaah! This is perfect! Every single line, just like that. And the final line is owww. Poor Garp, caught between Family and Duty...

He's got only himself to blame for training Luffy to be the Best. :D

Garp angst is okay! I can't imagine he could possibly be sitting by completely calm on the inside while all this is going on. The last line is a perfect ending to this.

Poor Garp! he loves his boys so and go and become such rogues. He's got a lot to worry about (what with Dragon being the world's most wanted man and his grandkids not all that far behind (and becoming more and more popular *i mean notorious*)) but he's damn proud of 'em!

Come Hell or high water – fire, brimstone and the end of the world AKA
Impel Down (check), giant tsunamis courtesy of Shirohige's power (present), Phoenix Marco (he's hot) Akainu's Magma powers (ready to blow)... world hasn't ended yet but whose to say what'll happen? War's just begun and Luffy has yet to make his entrance.

Nothing is wrong with you writing Garp angst. Your post, in fact, reminds me of this request on op_fanforall2: http://op-fanforall2.livejournal.com/597.html?thread=542805#t542805, and I'm happy someone wrote him even before the request was written.
I think, like in there, there's more regret hidden behind Garp's cheerful demeanour than he lets out. You caught it (and him) with the contradiction that he's laughing at all the terrible stuff happening to his boys; then the last line delivers the pun(ch) and reveals that the laughing was the same kind when one laughs when learning a loved one died. It's like in chapter 550 where he waves off Tsuru's comfort with a smile, then his panel on the last side where he's clearly desparate. ;_;

What I find interesting about Sengoku and him is the dynamic in their relationship. All the time Garp was laughing at the things Sengoku is blaming him about his family, is when the Fleet-Admiral acts like a superior to him. In the moment when he tells Garp he's going to reveal Ace's secret, he isn't exasperated while Garp doesn't joke or smile but even looks away. I wonder if in Japanese, there's a difference in their way of talking in these two situations.

You laugh because crying is not an option.

Your sentence has become canon with the arrival of chapter 556.

omg I ADORE THIS. "and there’s a love there that won’t be held back by walls and bars and chains and danger." sums up the love between Luffy and Ace imo perfectly. This is fucking amazing! ♥

I. Read this now, after 575, and... poor Garp. And the last line, and now Garp is crying, because... Oh, Garp.
