For Coby, everything began because of a barrel. If Luffy hadn't burst out of it at that moment in time, Coby might never have become a Marine. It wasn't as if anyone had encouraged him towards that career before he was press ganged onto Alvida's crew.
"I'm going to be a Marine someday!"
His schoolmates. "You? Ha! You've got pink hair and glasses! Marines are cool, you'll definitely never become one."
His teachers. "Coby, it's very dangerous to become a Marine. Perhaps you should think of something safer."
His parents. "Maybe you should think of doing something else, dear, athletics aren't exactly your strongest suit."
Well, they were wrong, weren't they? Captain Hina is cool and awe-inspiring and she has pink hair. Fleet Admiral Sengoku wears glasses and he's the commander of all the Marines! Coby is being trained to become strong by Vice-Admiral Garp himself and not being a Marine didn't stop pirates from abducting him. It's the Pirate Age, a dangerous time, but Coby is going to become the best Marine possible despite what anyone thinks.
It's funny, really. The first person to believe in his dream had been a total stranger who hadn't cared that he had pink hair or glasses or was weak and scared. Luffy changed Coby's life completely with a few stupid words. But Coby's grateful for those stupid words and wants to repay them somehow.
When Luffy becomes the Pirate King, Coby hopes he's there to see his friend's new beginning even if they are on opposite sides, just like Luffy was there for his.

Date: 2009-01-08 09:55 am (UTC)Poor Coby. I always figured he was picked on a lot as a kid even before Alvida came along. I liked how you illustrated how Luffy's simple example and comments gives back enough self esteem to move forward.
