Summary: The battlefield is Not A Place For Contemplation. Generally because it is unsafe and a decidedly bad idea unless you don't mind holes or gigantic papercuts on your person. But when you're the World's Greatest Swordsman, you're an exception.

Memoir

The metallic ringing of swords was both familiar and oddly soothing; as was the feel of tearing flesh, bleeding a wine only his sword drank. He belonged here, where chaos needed the governing of an eager sword reined by a steady mind and firm hand.

A true swordsman carries the heart of his sword, the will of a gentleman and the strength and grace of a monster.

An echo from his past. Memories. Something which only surfaced on the loneliest of nights.

I, um, I’m Juracule, nice to mee—

Hello, he remembered (it had sounded warm), I’m V—

He had been a boy once.

“A pleasure, Hawkeye Mihawk.”

The voice was different, a low, smooth tenor. So was his name.

He had a different name back then, when they had both been boys wielding big dreams and bigger blades, on a small island tucked away in one of the blues. Known for their women, romance and sensuous music.

The voice was as he remembered it. Warm. (Fond.)

It reminded him of innocent company, laughing at pajama choices and familiar embraces. It reminded him of youthful blunders, secrets and, dangerously, of urgent kisses, hot bodies and a sense of belonging.

“So you’ve heard of me?”

It reminded him that the man before him was no longer the boy he had grown up with.

But the passion, the warmth, was a familiarity he could not resist.

So he pushed against his blade more forcefully, letting it translate into something they had shared that one warm night on the beach with awkward limbs, strewn pajamas, stifled moans and heated lips.

A reminder. A tug on the leash he knew they both still wore.

“I’d be a fool had I not.”

The returning smile, deeper than that brainless perpetual grin, was an answering tug.

XD Ahaha, CALL ME OLD FASHIONED, but the crack pairings (like Vista/Mihawk, Eneru/Crocodile, Doflamingo/Crocodile - although oh god with all the fodder Oda is giving that pairing's fandom they'll never shut up about it - and the list goes on) of One Piece or just crack pairings in general have never really been my thing. My logic goes like "if it makes sense on a more than OMGFANGIRLSQUEEEEEE level, then I'll give it a chance."

But you actually pulled this off in a way that makes sense, and is really well written. So kudos, bro. :) <3

XDDDDDDDD To be completely fair and brutally honest, the fascination with this pair started thanks to a conversation on Spanish attributes, guitars, flamenco and, err, many other things not quite related to piracy. -laughs- So, whatever, yanno~ -shrugs- Your preferences make more sense than mine XDDDDDDD (And, yaargh omg. I know Doflamingo totally said some flaming lines to Croc, but alkjsdhlksjdh is this fandom coming from?! It breaks my brainnnn!)

Which, in all honesty, I can't blame you for. What could be more entertaining than gay spaniards? Not a lot. And basically my logic; everybody has their preferences and that's cool as long as they're not obnoxious about it. WHICH YOU ARE NOT, which is freaking awesome because so much of the One Piece crack fandom (that I've seen, anyway) is completely bratty about the stuff they like.

So, thank you for being a respectable crack!fan and actually working with a crack pairing in a way that makes it a) interesting and b) MAKE SENSE. =P Seriously, your writing style is absolutely lovely. <3 I am in envy. :[

I've never understood forcing pairings on people DDD: I mean, I don't force my dislike for certain pairings on them, so why should they force what they like on meee? @_@ Oh. -snorts- Bratty? -flails- I was in the k-pop fandom before I came back to One Piece, and I can safely say that it's the MOTHER of all Bratty, Immature, Short-Sighted, Delusional fandoms. D< I think I lost a couple of precious brain cells to the insipidness of the whole fandom. )< WHICH IS WHY OP ROCKS. THE PEOPLE HERE ARE more MATURE!

Oei, oei. Crack fandoms are crack for a reason. I mean, I'm almost fairly certain that Oda made the majority of his characters asexual for a reason. So logically speaking, most of the pairings we like are only distant possibilities or complete impossibilities. That's what makes 'em fun to mess around with, isn't it? :D

and yeah, I get the whole crack thing, but some pairings make more sense than others is what I'm getting at. =P Prime reason why I'm not a big crack fan is because, well, they're crack. They hardly make any sense to begin with, and most if not all the crack pairings I've seen done before are just for OMGHAWT or stuff like that, you know what I mean? Haha.

Basically, I'm a stickler for believable subtext. (which you can find with...a lot of pairings, especially in the Strawhat crew. which is pretty much why I'm open to a lot of stuff with them except chopper oh god I don't want to hear about reindeer cock god damn it OP fandom D8) I can readily admit that I'm really picky when it comes to this sort of thing. XP Of course, I'm not without fault. I...will admit that I have a soft spot for Zoro/Perona because of a few pages in the manga and that one bit of filler in the anime. Hello, I'm a giant hypocrite! XD

But haha, YES! You are the winner. And you know why? Because even if what you wrote was for something that wasn't to my taste or what I would normally go for, that doesn't change the fact that you pulled it off beautifully. Regardless of preference, good writing is good writing and you pulled off a crack pairing in a way that actually made it believable. So, kudos. ;3

-laughs- It is true that some pairings make more sense than others. FROBIN, FOR INSTANCE. XDDDDDDD <3 (I just found the comm, btw, I'll, err, stow it away for future fangirling, AND I FOUND MOAR THINGS YOU WROTE. -FLAILS LIKE MAD- ♥) Um. Err, personally, I DID find that, well, amongst the Strawhats in particular, there were a few pairings which had the whole 'natural' thing going on. It just seems so EASY with some of them. But OMGAWD YES. NO REINDEER DICK PLEASE. -PAINED WINCE- I CAN'T EVEN BEGIN TO SAY HOW MUCH THAT PAINS ME. DISTURBS ME. RUINS MY IMPRESSION OF CHRISTMAS FOREVER. LKSJHDLAKJS. Though, to be fair, it isn't just in the OP fandom. I've noticed that there's a certain fascination that fandom In General has with beastiality. I don't really care, it's just aljskdhlakjdh Really Not My Thing. -wince-

Other pairings, for instance, like. I'm a ZoLu die-hard, but I don't slam ZoSan just because of it. -shrugs- Hell, they do have interesting dynamics and there're well-written fics of them. They just don't occur to me to be anything beyond rivals/grudging friends, but hey. Luffy's amazingly asexual as well, so, it's not as if my OTP hasn't HUMANGUS LOOPHOLES XD :D Apart from that, I really haven't many qualms about other pairings apart from preferences. X) I do, however, think that Usopp/Perona is moaar likely if it's an AU setting. -LAUGHS- But I've read a really sweet Zoro/Perona somewhere I can't remember, but I do remember liking it. ^^

AHAHAH. THE ONLY REASON WHY MIHAWK/VISTA WASN'T WRITTEN IN COMPLETE CRACK WITH THE 'OLE!' AND CASTANETS WAS BECAUSE I'M A SUCKER FOR ANGST. And angst can make for beautiful writing. I've also the terrible habit of being too verbose when writing dialogue (something I consider a main feature in crack. I mean, what conveys teh funneh better than well-woven dialogue? XD), so I went for abstract. AND I FAIL AT WRITING ABSTRACT CRACK. XDDDDDDDD I can't. I don't know howww. D: Ah well. All's well, I suppose. XD (STOP FLATTERING ME. bahaha yeeeah. Fandoms in general DO seem to have some kind of fascination with bestiality and that's...yeah, I'll just avoid that like the plague, thanks. :<

oh god you're a zolu fan, too? 8D C'MERE, YOU. <3333 But haha, yeah, I know what you mean. I'm...honestly open to most if not all possible Strawhat pairings if they're written in-character. For example, I like ZoSan enough when it's done WELL, but so often it's really OOC with Sanji being ~weepy ukechan nyaaaaa ^3^~ and stuff like that it just turns me off. XD Because seriously, the most those two could have going for them (in my opinion at least) is them treating sex just like another form of sparring. Which is just fine, imo. idk why most of the fandom feels the need to warp their personalities to suit their needs for sappy romance, but eh, to each their own, yeah? :)

But yeah, there's only one pairings I'm absolutely gung-ho about (GEE I WONDER) and...don't like them paired with anyone else. However, I've still seen stuff of Franky and Robin paired with other characters, and it honestly didn't bug me at all (and rather liked what I saw, actually) since it was written in a believable fashion. I like that. XD But then again, who doesn't, right? ;P

ALKSLKSJHLAKLS YOU'RE A ZOLU FAN?! WE MUST BE SOULMATES! Question, though. Why're we a dying breeeed? ): I've noticed that the ZoLu comm is all but dead and that the fixation of fandom remains with amazing focus on ZoSan. ): THE ZOLU FANDOM MUST REVIVE. DDD: I mean, Thriller Bark was, like, COMPLETE USABLE FODDER. :X That and they have amazing camaraderie that goes beyond anyone's comprehension. They've completely got a Ben/Shanks feel with a less Mother-henning around. ♥ I ♥ ZoLu! '______' V XD

Ah, yes. Exactly. That is exactly the aspect I really, Really Do Not Like about ZoSan. I've read some pretty nice ones, yes, but the majority of the fandom appears to like Sanji as a weepy uke full of insecurities or Zoro as the bumbling-idiot-suddenly-romantic type. O_o That makes me cringe, it does. LAKJDSLAKS And YES. I always figured that their relationship would be a rivalry of sorts. Kinda of a LOOKITWHO'SBETTERINBEDAHAHAHA! sorta thing. :/ Maybe it's just me. D:

Idk about that! Possibly because, well, Luffy is Luffy and realistically he'd act like an idiot in any kind of relationship. Although, that's what I like about ZoLu - it's fucking adorkable. >:[ But yeah, I think the reason why ZoSan is so popular is because of the fact that so many people seem to enjoy the whole HAET=LOEV idea in any kind of fandom, baha. Which is fine, but if you're gonna do it, PLEASE do it in character, y'know? XP Bahaha.

And hahaha, I...think I'm probably the one of the only people who are sick of the current arc. D: Idk, but to me it's pretty much a rehash of the Enies Lobby arc except with a lot more sudden "what-a-tweest"s and lots of Boa acting like a lovestruck schoolgirl (urgh). =P But then again, I'm probably just bitter because damn it, it's not OP unless all the strawhats are together. ;_; Although, a few things about this arc that I DO enjoy are Iva, Moria, and Crocodile. (Moria and Croc are my favourite OP characters next to Franky oh god <3 And...well, Iva is just wonderful.) Eeee.
