Title: A Memorial Already in Progress
rating: PG13 (language)
words: 460- way over.
pairing: None...maybe Zo/San if you squint.
media:fic
topic:Candle
Notes: This may become a series of drabbles elsewhere...

It is a huge wax sculpture of the mans more suave likeness, complete with a cigarette that acted as a wick. A life sized memorial candle that no one had the forethought to bring matches to light.

A panicked melancholy took over some as the need to do this right warred against having a single nakama leave the company of the rest so soon to fetch a lighter from the ship.

“Oi, Marimo.”

Zoros eyes shifted to the blond sitting on the rock across from him, looking disturbed but far too calm considering.

“My lighter is in my right pocket. Let’s get this over with.”

With a sigh the swordsman stood and walked toward the cook and passed him to the casket perched on the platform Franky had built behind him. He slipped his hand into the dead mans pocket and pulled out the silver flip top lighter and tossed it to Usopp.

“Sanji…you helped us again. Thank you!” Luffy called over to the coffin before turning to watch the memorial candle be lit with all the fanfare Usopp, Brook, and Frankys combined efforts could produce.

“No problem captain!” Sanji waved and called back from the rock with extra enthusiasm that the swordsman could tell was fake.

“Don’t do that. Don’t pretend like he can hear or see you.”

Sanji lowered his arm slowly and glared behind his shoulder.

“Is there really some problem pretending that I’m not the reason everyone is so damn sad?”

Zoro didn’t have a response he was happy with for that and tried something else.

“It’s your damn funeral…don’t you think you should cross over now or something?”

Sanji pulled the ghost of the lighter Zoro just tossed Usopp from his pocket and quickly lit a cigarette before taking a few puffs.

“I’ll leave when I am good and ready, shithead. You guys couldn’t even manage to find a fucking light with a smoker right there. I need to make sure you guys can make it.”

Zoro wants to tell him to move on and they’ll all be okay without him but he was there when Sanji had died and it feels too much like a lie.

“Why am I the only one that knows you’re still around?”

Sanji shrugged and Zoro watched the back rise and fall with breath he knew he wasn’t getting.

“Maybe you’re the only one who could handle that…” A nod back to the box holding his body. “And this.” He let his hand wisp through the rock.

“Ah.”

“Who knows…?”

Usopp tossed back the lighter and Zoro went to put it back where he found it. The crew seemed to have started drinking in the large candles light and sharing stories. The cook seemed to relax a bit.

"No...Keep it. I like knowing it's where it can be of some use." An exhale of smoke as Zoro nods and slips it into his own pocket instead. “Hey…I’m still nakama right?”

“Yeah.”

“We have a skeleton…it’s only fitting we have a ghost too.”

For the first time since the cook died Zoro grins.

“Yeah.”

zomg. you killed me.

Seriously, this - ok, I don't even have the words. it's heart wrenching. I really, really don't know who to feel more sorry for, here - Sanji, Zoro or the rest of the crew. Can I just feel sorry for all of them?

I'd be very interested in this continuing on as a drabble series, though. It's very creative, and very one-piece fitting, too.

I...actually really like this. I'm not usually a big fan of stuff that's mostly just dialogue, but this is really, really nice. :> Very in character, and I can picture something like this happening, if Oda ever had the balls to kill off a character. :P Either way, great work!
