As the burning shot of whisky coursed its way down his throat, Smoker felt his cheeks briefly pinch at the feel of the liquid. It was like swallowing liquid fire, but he didn't care; the searing heat was a comfort if anything else.
Passing behind his seat, Tashigi cast him a disapproving look as he put the empty glass back on the bar and picked up his cigars, before sighing as she made her way to the stairs. It didn't go unnoticed, but he did not care. If he wanted his body to rot from the inside out with tobacco and alcohol, then he would smoke and drink away. There was no point in missing the pleasures in life in such a hazardous occupation in which he could die any day, as long as he could keep going. He wouldn't fear death, not when it was entirely inevitable.
As much as she could quietly disapprove, he'd ignore it. Never did she approach him directly, and he doubted she ever would, on a principle of his rank if anything. Perhaps if their positions were reversed, he might be encountering something more formidable, something that he would have to reciprocate, but without a true challenge, he'd never change.
A lopsided grin crossed over his face at the idea, just as he started to pour himself another drink. Professional it might not be, but he knew full well how fierce she could be when it was called for. And how fast her abilities were progressing.
Perhaps drinking fire would melt the lance of ice that passed through his chest at the prospect of times to come.
